Kirk Lipsitz ’18 knows his way around steel. Not only did he manufacture what some have called “the largest smoker in captivity” for the Kramer Outback, Kirk, who minored in art, has several steel sculptures on campus for the enjoyment of others. All were created in the Art Department and with the guidance of Mark Monroe of the art faculty. Kirk’s red Ebb and Flow is located near the Jonsson Fountain outside Ida Green Communication Center’s back doors; Pick-Up-Stix is in front of the Betsy Dennis Forster Art Studio Complex; and his ’Roo—a fine spot for photos—sits between the IDEA Center and the north doors to Hughey Gym. Kirk is working in Waco in his family scrap metal recycling business, continuing a tradition begun in 1895. He will do some art in his spare time, but he does not plan it to be a main source of income.
