Austin College students headed to the classroom in January—this time not to learn, but to teach. Students participating in JanServe spent the afternoon with students at Dillingham Intermediate School and Piner Middle School in Sherman.
JanServe is an annual service project organized by the student-led Service Station. Naureen Dharani ’13, Service Station Board member, said that though many of its service programs have outreach to the children of Sherman ISD, the board decided to team up with the schools for service in an educational experience.
Austin College students taught science lessons on energy and temperature in a program the Service Station Board called “Science Rules: Let’s Heat Up the Schools.”
Al Hambrick ’79, superintendent of Sherman ISD, spoke to the Austin College students before they boarded school buses to travel back in time to fifth grade and junior high.
JanServe is just one of several all-campus projects the Service Station Board coordinates each year, in addition to coordinating community service needs with available students throughout the year.
