Austin College senior Sonia Charales has received notice of acceptance for publication of her 20th piece of literary or art creation.
Austin College’s Suspension Magazine was the home of her very first published work, a multilingual poem, included in the 2018-2019 issue.
Sonia said she has published poetry, prose, artwork, and poetry-art hybrid works across seven different publications, including Suspension, of course.
She explained that a lot of her literary work involves Indian culture, multilingualism, and current issues about inclusion. “I tend to create work around ideas of simplicity and how they are part of a much bigger picture, especially with my artwork,” she said.
Like others, Sonia found that the pandemic spurred her creative expression. “I honestly did not put out a lot of my work until the pandemic happened and I discovered several outlets for creative expression,” she said. “As an editor for Suspension, I find it so important for everyone to have a place where they feel welcomed to share their stories. Austin College has led me to discover more of my interests and find ways to support them in ways in which I grow.”
Sonia’s works can be found in Suspension Literary Magazine, antonym, Rhodora Magazine, The Indian Feminist Review, Live It Up Magazine, Maw Poetry Magazine, and most recently, Agapanthus Collective.
Originally from Sunnyvale, Texas, Sonia is completing a major in English and a minor in chemistry and considering careers in health care. This year, Sonia serves as editor-in-chief of Suspension, the College’s literary magazine that offers individuals a space to express themselves through art and literature and tell stories about the world around them.
