"Whether solving complex problems, engaging in creative pursuits, or leading with compassion and integrity, the Austin College spirit of curiosity and innovation is evident in all they do.”

Greetings, ’RooNation!

The Austin College Magazine is a look back at the previous year in the life of the College, and what a year it has been! Coming on the heels of our 175th year, there is a momentum and energy on  campus that is palpable. In the pages of this magazine, you will read about a lot of things that are new—a new faculty cohort that is one of the largest in the College’s history, new bachelor of science degree offerings that will help our graduates be competitive in today’s job market, and new homes along Grand Avenue that will serve as transitional housing for new employees as they settle into the area.

You will also read about some things that are not new to Austin College, like a spirit of creativity, curiosity, and servant leadership among our graduates. In fact, curiosity is the keyword for this issue. This year, we launched a new website at austincollege.edu, and the tagline on the homepage is “Curiosity can take you anywhere.” That sentiment rings true across these pages. As you read about the makers, inventors, performers, and scholars featured in these pages, you will see time and again how a spark of curiosity, supported by a dynamic liberal arts education, leads to creativity and innovation.

That innovative spirit can be seen in every corner of campus. Over the past year, we have made some much-needed updates to our grounds and landscaping; this campus renewal effort has me thinking more than usual about trees. When planting a tree, you are instructed to dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and loosen the soil at the bottom so that the new tree has the best chance of growing a strong and deep root system. The final step in the instructions, once the tree is planted and the hole is backfilled with soil, is always “water liberally.” It occurs to me that this is an apt metaphor for a liberal arts education. Here at Austin College, we educate liberally just as you liberally water a sapling. Create a wide base, give plenty of room to grow, and water generously.

The evergreen skills gained through a liberal arts education—critical thinking, creative problem solving, effective communication, flexibility, adaptability, working as a team, and the ability to connect ideas—are more vital than ever. These pages are filled with stories of our incredible faculty, students, staff, and alumni who have benefited from a liberal arts education and are using it to make meaningful contributions in their fields and communities. Whether solving complex problems, engaging in creative pursuits, or leading with compassion and integrity, the Austin College  spirit of curiosity and innovation is evident in all they do.

I hope you enjoy this latest edition of our annual magazine and feel a sense of pride in being part of ’RooNation. Thank you for your continued support of Austin College and for helping us nurture the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders.

Here’s to another year of curiosity and growth.

Best,
