Distinguished Alumni Awards
Awardees 2013 are left to right, Richard Matkin ’74, superintendent of Plano (Texas) ISD; Butch Worley ’76, deputy director of athletics at University of Texas at Austin, supervising all men’s sports; Donald Lovering ’78, board-certified family physician, Austin, Texas; Richard Peeples ’70, attorney and social activist, Dallas, Texas; First-Decade Awardee Anthony Swift ’03, attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) who has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives and appeared as an expert on major news sources, Washington, D.C.; and Han Pham Hulen ’98, medical director for the Center for Wound Care at Medical City Dallas and president and CEO of Hulen Wound Care Professionals, Dallas, Texas.
Heywood C. Clemons Volunteer Service Award
The Clemons Award is given to alumni or friends of Austin College in honor of continued service and commitment to the College. The 2013 recipients are Rodney Durham ’90 of Sherman and Shane Allison ’96 of Collinsville, Texas. Both have been longtime volunteers for Kangaroo athletics team. Rodney has volunteered since his college days with the volleyball and basketball programs. He is a physical education and health teacher at Dillingham Intermediate School in Sherman. Shane has served 15 seasons as an assistant coach for ’Roo football, 11 of those as a volunteer. He has been teaching for 14 years, the past 10 of those at Whitesboro Middle School, where he now teaches in the Grand Central Station Learning Lab, supporting struggling learners.
Cindy Curtis Bean Service to Alumni Award
The Service to Alumni Award honors faculty or staff members who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to the support of Austin College alumni around the world. The 2013 recipients, pictured with Cindy Bean ’73, are David Norman ’83, director of athletics and chair of the Exercise and Sport Science program, and Jack Pierce, who has been a member of Austin College’s faculty since 1967, serving since 1988 as director of Health Sciences and McGaw Chair of Health Sciences.
