In perhaps a first in Austin College history, three Austin College alumni were key figures in a non-’Roos Athletics baseball game. Al Hockaday Jr. ’76 umpired the game where Harrison Baldwin ’19 and Wes Tarbox ’90 were coaching opposing teams. The trio represented 12 years of Austin College Baseball, spanning 46 years between them. Hockaday recently completed his term on the Austin College Alumni Board.
Will Heron ’11 is the artist liaison and a participating artist for the new Grapevine, Texas, location of the immersive art experience Meow Wolf. This exhibition displays a surreal, interactive setting that mixes nostalgia with thought-provoking visuals. In February, Heron created a mural to support the LGBTQ+ community in Texas. Standing at 7,000 square feet, his mural titled “Intergalactic” can be found at 3203 McKinney Avenue in Dallas.
Retired Illinois florist Jean Beck Carlson ’82 (on the right) was selected to help transform the White House into a holiday wonderland for 2023. She worked alongside hundreds of volunteers on the outdoor main entrance, the Candy Room, the Library, the Palm Room, and the Oval Office. She says the opportunity was a highlight of her 45-year career as a designer and florist.
A History Snapshot Professor Emeritus Dr. Light Cummins returned to campus for 2023 Homecoming Weekend to weave a tale of Austin College’s unique history, with a focus on the ears that John D. Moseley served as President. Cummins’ deep knowledge of all things Austin College developed during his 40-year career in the History department. His talk at the Golden ’Roo brunch was a special treat for those ’Roos who knew “John D.”
