The nearing of the spring term always brings a rush of new art around campus. Large outdoor sculptures sometimes seem to appear mysteriously around campus. In every exhibit space, seniors present works of photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and most every sort of display.
Throughout the next few weeks, several senior shows are scheduled. As they appear around campus, their descriptions may pop up here as the students prepare more information. Check back frequently.
April 19 – April 23
Nadia Hannon’s work, titled “This Little Piggy,” displayed in Craig Hall Gallery and featured ceramics inspired by the classic piggy bank.
April 26 – April 30
Zoe Garrett’s work, a collection of acrylic paintings entitled “Queer?” will be on display in the Ross Student Gallery of Betsy Dennis Forster Art Studio Complex.
Zoe is completing majors in French and environmental studies with a minor in art. She describes art as more a pastime than a passion. “When other things are stressful, the act of creation is gratifying,” she said. “I’ve really grown and developed a lot due to my time in the Austin College Art program. I learned technical skills but also to have more confidence in my works and learned more effective language to use to discuss art.”
April 26 – April 30
Johnathon Biffar’s work will be on display in Craig Hall’s Gallery.
His show is titled “Laughing Stock” and is digital work created in Illustrator and Photoshop. He likes to joke around, he said, “and cheesy one-liners and puns are right up my alley. Every piece is either a pun or a play on an idiom,” he said. “For example, there’s one for ‘head in the clouds,’ where a giant hot air balloon is the guy’s head. They’re a little on the nose, but I hope people find some entertainment from them.”
Johnny is completing a major in studio arts and a minor in media studies. He definitely expects to continue his art in some fashion, as he will pursue a career in graphic design. “I hope in five years or so, I don’t like anything I’ve done here in this show because I’ll have gotten better,” he said.
